Matchstick Wall Street

I was emailed by a professor at the College of Arts Media & Communications at CSU Northridge that my paintings inspired a project for her students, an entire Matchstick Wall Street! I had to go out and visit to see the project in person and it is EPIC! Here's some photos and and video to give you a better feel for it. I have been invited to be a guest of honor at the Official Burning Ceremony what takes place Friday, October 13th; sounds like an appropriate day. I can't wait to see that!!! There better be a film crew there catching it all on video because this would be great for youtube! Protest! Express your ourage! The hearts and minds of the people need to change because our leaders are not going to do anything for us.

Great review on ArtweekLA for Alex Schaefer!

http://artweek.la/issue/may-28-2012/article/alex-schaefer-irrational-exuberance

Happy Memorial Day!

Just blocking in a new painting in Eagle Rock! Our forefathers fought for freedom and against tyrrany, and we do today. Freedom from economic tyrrany!

Here's how the painting turned out after a few hours. It was amazing today! People were honking at me giving thumbs up, I had folks wanting to take their picture with me. Everyone was in total agreement: that these banks are the terrorists America need to be fighting against in order to preserve Freedom. Our forefathers fought for our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Today our elected representatives, our military, and our police swear an oath to uphold our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Our wars are supposedly meant to spread the values laid out in our constitution and bill of rights; but I'm not sure how well that's been going in the last 40 years. Seems like our wars and our leaders are not REALLY spreading the values of the Constitution and Bill of Rights after all. Instead, everything they are doing in in opposition to the values of our constitution and Bill of rights.

H.R. 347 in this country, Bill 78 in Canada, our leaders, in order to "secure the homeland from terrorists" are are stripping us, the people of our country, of our basic human rights.

THIS IS THE ONLY THING WE ALL NEED TO REMEMBER: THE BANKS HAVE CREATED THIS ENTIRE CRISIS AND THEY NEED TO BE BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL!

The painting needs a few details and exquisite flames and brushstrokes, but it's getting there! oil on canvas, 24 by 30.

winning hearts and minds

How heartwarming is this? here's an email I got recently from a fan. People are waking up. I plan to visit the installation next week! I'd love to hold one of the matches when they burn it all up! ahahahahah!

"I am an art education professor at State University Northridge, and was very inspired by your burning banks paintings. I read about the incident in Van Nuys in the LA Times, and decided that it would be a good idea for my classes-all non-art majors-to do a group project called Burning Wall Street. Students researched the Wall Street bailouts and were required to listen to or watch "Democracy Now" on their computers. It didn't take long, even for the freshmen, to make the connection between their personal financial disasters and Wall Street. As one student put it, "this project is like Burning Man, only relevant."

Anyway, I want to thank you for triggering the idea. The banks are made of wooden matches and wood glue, with some paper panels cut from the Wall Street Journal. 150 students participated in the project. The first photo is one we took in the classroom, with banks on both sides of Wall Street, which is constructed from play money. (Instead of the Wall Street bull we created a Wall Street pig also covered by play money.)

The exhibition, which in this venue is 40 ft long, is installed in Manzanita Hall on the CSUN campus, where it will be safely behind a plexiglass wall for the summer. In August it will move to the West Gallery in the CSUN art department. After that, we plan on rescuing the tiny "occupy" people, and take the banks to a special area to be burned.

If you would be interested in visiting the installation, I would be delighted to show it to you.
Thanks again for inspiring what turned out to be an educational experience that has really resonated with students."

I'm taking her up on her offer and will be visiting next week!

All I got from passers by was compliments and "are you the guy who paints burning banks?" seriously, from a "man on the street" perspective, a LOT of people no NOT like chase bank!

Chase Burning, Figueroa and 7th listed on ebay!

CLICK HERE FOR THE LISTING ON EBAY During the May Day protests in Los Angeles, I screwed a stick to this painting and used it for my protest sign. I'm still painting these because nothing has changed. Banks continue to wreak financial terrorism across the globe and politicians continue to do nothing to stop them. But I think we are slowly waking up! In light of recent protest and publicity I'm going to list this painting for auction on ebay. It's a plein air painting, 22 by 28 inches, oil on canvas. I'm going to start the bidding at $1500. cost of shipping will vary depending on location Here are some links of interest:

trade hard

That line was was taken from some MF Global advertising copy. That's right, trade hard. Jon Corzine was paid $8 million a year as CEO of MF Global. The company gambled like a crack addled sex addict and LOST. And in the the chaotic days of the collapse, MF Global stole $1.6 billion of segregated and untouchable private deposits to cover their ass; outright theft of money that most directly affects the farming industry of America. People we need to reframe the definition of terrorism in our mind because Jon Corzine still walks free. This painting is work in progress but you know me I can never resist posting. I'm trying to channel a little George Bellows in this one, I think I'm the Neo-Ashcan. This painting hearkens back to a day when human beings actually performed trades with each other... Now it's all super-computers and the borg!

I can't believe this was only taped four days ago?! So awesome! live richly

I need to get back in the blogging habit. I have a big backup from not posting for the show at Charlie James Gallery. Ok, a new post a day for the next week! Here's a painting from a series of bacchanalian debt parties coupled with bank logos and slogans; I find the juxtaposition of the two to be so perfect. Live richly indeed! acrylic on canvas, 24 by 48 p.s. click here for last week's episode of the Alex Schaefer Hour!

five minutes of Max Keiser at the Last Bookstore in Los Angeles

this was so spur of the moment it was exciting to be swept along and get it on film! Max got up from the table at dinner and ran across the street to get a newspaper. Stacy said "Alex follow Max!". It was a brisk walk charged with silence and brief moments of impending excitement. We got to the Last Bookstore in Los Angeles where it was open mic night. There was a strict five minute limit and with about 2 minutes preparation Max spit these amazing beat-poetics grinding off the theme "austerity".

MAY DAY 2012

It was pretty exciting. I made a protest sign by screwing a stick to a painting and on the back I stapled a piece of torn canvas with the words "Our Banks Are Now Terrorists". The sign was a hit with everyone! If you listen to today's episode of the Alex Schaefer Hour I break down what the protest meant and felt like to me. I might be able to add some links in the near future to other photos and videos, but so far here's what I have!
